Investing Costs That Will Devour Your Returns - Huffington Post

What's a reasonable fee to pay for investing your own money? The answer: Much less than what you're probably paying for your 401(k) -- and the worst bit is you might not even realize it.

According to a report from New York-based think tank Demos, 401(k) fees can cost the average household as much as $155,000 over the course of a lifetime. Yet many employers have no idea when it comes to the fees they and their employees pay for their 401(k) plans, a recent report shows.

Until recently, mutual funds have been notoriously opaque about how much is being charged for trading or administering an account. Thankfully, as of next month, The U.S. Labor Department will begin requiring extensive disclosure of all 401(k) charges.

This is good news, but it doesn't help explain what's reasonable. How do you know when you're paying too much?

Here are some tips for avoiding return-eating fees:

1. Make Cost Matter

The value of an investment is, ultimately, in the returns. You should be wary of any fund or manager that charges high fees (1 percent or more), because high costs will only drain your savings. 1 percent might sound tiny -- but it can work out to be a third of all returns after tax and inflation.

Be wary of managers or products that claim that high fees are worth it because they get better returns. A study by Morningstar found that low-cost funds outperformed high-cost funds in every single time period and data point tested. It's simple: keeping costs low is the smart way to invest.

2. Know Your Fee Plan

Not all accounts are created equal. Some products charge broker fees for every trade while others charge a percentage of assets under management. Some products require you pay for a wire transfer in order to fund your account. These costs can add up. According to the Wall Street Journal, mutual funds charge hidden fees that can make a fund two or three times as costly as advertised.

3. Align Your Interests

In a previous life helping banks make more money, I saw product after product that was designed for corporate profit over customer value. When building my company Betterment, an online investment product, I made aligning interests a priority. When our customers make money, we make money.

It might come as a surprise to learn that not all financial advice is in your best interest. Brokers make money off of the products they sell you -- so the more you pay, the more they earn, or in some cases, the more you trade the more they earn (and excessive trading is definitely not in your best interest).

"Fee-only" is a preferable approach -- but beware of financial advisors who overcharge. This is not in your best interest either (see #1).

4. Be Suspicious of Big Promises

Few people can consistently outperform the market. Be wary of anyone who tries to convince you they have the secret sauce. Their returns would have to be significantly better than the market in order to offset the costs incurred by their active trading.

Instead, think about what's important to you in life and make a pact with yourself to achieve it. Dedicate a percentage of each paycheck to your goal, and invest it in the broad market portfolio. It might not be as intoxicating as tall tales of above-average returns, but the likelihood of you achieving your dreams is far greater this way -- and that's anything but boring.

Google Chrome Comes to iPhone and iPad

It?s the second day of Google?s I/O conference, and Google has even more big announcements. Chrome, Google?s popular web browser, is now available for the iPhone and iPad. Apple users can now access their saved Chrome tabs and browsing history across all of their devices, not just desktop and laptop computers.

Google Chrome for the iPhone and iPad will have all of the features that desktop users have grown to love, including tabbed browsing and?incognito?mode. Switching through tabs requires a simple drag from the edge of the screen, rather than mobile Safari?s separate tab manager view. Switching between regular and?incognito?mood is equally simple, a tab of a button switches back and forth.

Google Chrome will be available in the Apple App Store later today. Check back for a hands-on once Chrome is?available.

On historic day at Supreme Court, U.S. citizens and world come to watch

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - In sweltering Washington heat, more than 1,000 people from across the United States and around the world gathered outside the U.S. Supreme Court Thursday to await the court's decision on President Barack Obama's contested healthcare law.

The historic day proved a magnet not only for the media throngs but for belly-dancing protesters, flag-waving, bullhorn-wielding partisans on all sides and the now omni-present Tea Party sentinel in full Revolutionary War uniform.

The mood outside the court, which is across the street from the domed U.S. Capitol, was divided like the justices themselves, who ruled the health care law constitutional.

A pregnant Michelle Junessa, her husband Gabriel - a salesman from New Orleans - and their 3-year-old son, Austin, booked their flights to Washington two days ago hoping to witness a striking down of the entire law.

"We feel strongly about Obamacare not being put into place ... it's nerve racking," she said. "It needs to go, it needs to be reworked. It was too much too fast, shoving it down our throats."

A few feet away, Liz and Stan Lehman from Arkansas, who work as a nurse and medical imager respectively, sat watching the spectacle, taking in the competing chants of the pro- and anti-healthcare camps.

The Lehmans admitted they were uncomfortable with the law's individual mandate requiring Americans to buy health coverage or pay a penalty. However, they support the rest of the law - especially the provision protecting people with pre-existing conditions from being denied coverage.

Stan Lehman said being there reminded him of key moments during the U.S. civil rights movement a half century ago. "It's a biggie," he said as he looked toward the white marble court building.

Earlier, a gathering of young pro-Obama supporters had come out in full force toting signs reading: "I love Obama-care."

In their midst was Kristan Hawkins, the executive director of Students for Life America, an anti-abortion organization campaigning against the healthcare law. Hawkins, tried to counter the group's cheers, speaking intermittently into a megaphone.

"We have our protests actually down the street. I just chose to step here in the middle," she said, citing long-wait times for medical treatment in countries with universal healthcare, like Canada and Britain, as a main reason for her opposition to the law.

CROWD REACTS AS AMBULANCE ARRIVES

A few soft strains of people singing "God Bless America" filtered through the back of the crowd as it quieted down in anticipation of the court's ruling.

The decision, released just after 10 a.m. EDT, was greeted initially by a roar of approval and cheering from those in support. That was soon followed by a stereo blasting Obama's signature 2008 campaign song - Stevie Wonder's "Signed, Sealed Delivered, I'm Yours".

Minutes later the police pushed the crowd back even further to make way for an ambulance that had just arrived. As a stretcher was pulled out, an officer told Reuters: "A lady has just had a heart attack. We've had a few people faint."

The rest of the morning belonged to the sounds of a rally, organized on the court steps by the conservative Tea Party movement and attended by Republican congresswoman Michele Bachmann.

The rally's chants of "November is coming!" and "We will repeal!" referred to the group's next hope: that presumptive Republican nominee Mitt Romney will be elected in the November election and will work to fulfill his pledge to repeal the law.

INSIDE COURTROOM: GLOBAL VOICES

Inside the Supreme Court, tourists wearing Hawaiian shirts, shorts and baseball caps streamed past groups of men and women in dark suits clutching thick white copies of the decision.

At the entrance to the courtroom, where the nine justices' empty chairs loomed in the background, two young women in hijabs politely asked a bystander to take their photo.

Marwa Jamal and Ghofran Mansoub were visiting from Yemen - a country caught in the throes of the Arab Spring; its people struggling for their own rights.

Both women, informed by their own experiences, were struck by the order and civility of the scene outside the court.

"Today is a historical day. We saw the demonstrations and good for the American people today. Each people try fight for their rights and ask for their rights in their own way, peacefully," Jamal said. "We are going to send these photos home and say where we were when this decision happened."

Matrix One is a $99 ICS tablet that could ship to retailers next month... but probably won't (hands-on)

Matrix One is a $99 Android ICS tablet that could ship to retailers next month but probably won't handson video

From Barcelona to Hanover to Vegas and Taipei, we've seen our fair share of low-end Android tablets, some of which actually offer a bit of promise, and get it done for under 200 bucks. And while even a few sub-$100 models have littered the exhibition hall floors, they're most often mere vaporware, never actually making their way to US and European retailers and online shops. The Matrix One, for its part, could actually get the nod of approval from big box execs, however -- according to company reps, at least. And it wouldn't be a half-bad option at $99, shipping with Android 4.0.3, a 2-megapixel webcam, 1.5GHz Cortex A8 processor and an 800 x 480-pixel 7-inch capacitive display. Those specs also make their way to a nearly identical $149 flavor, which ups its budget counterpart's 512MB RAM and 4 gigs of storage to 1GB and 16GB, respectively, while keeping the other components intact.

While that display won't best any brand-name slab on the market, it's certainly usable, even in bright sunlight, as we experienced today at CE Week in New York City. The tablet performed just fine during our quick demo, which included navigating through some menus and watching a few HD video clips. The built-in speaker on the rear won't come close to filling a room (or even a noisy car, perhaps), but a headphone jack will let movie fans and youngsters alike appreciate content a bit more, especially if traditional tablets are priced out of reach. There's also an HDMI port for outputting 1080p video to a TV, along with one full-size USB port, a mini-USB connector for syncing and updates, a power port and a micro-SD card slot, for adding up to 32 gigs of extra storage.

You'll also find a built-in mic and a two-megapixel webcam (no rear-facing shooter, however). All in all, the 11.1-ounce package is quite polished, especially given the price. We won't likely be adding the Matrix One to our personal collection, but if a $99 tablet is on your must-have list, this wouldn't be a bad choice -- let's just hope it does indeed pop up in stores, perhaps as soon as the tablet's ready to ship at the end of next month. There's a gallery below if you'd care to take a closer look, and do jump past the break as well -- that's where you'll find our hands-on video, with a lively Manhattan soundscape to boot.

Bad Posture tells you to sit up straight, replaces your mom with an Arduino

At certain point in every geek's life, their mother gives up and stops yelling at them to sit up straight. If the lack of constant reminders to maintain good posture has you slouching and hunching, there are countless technological substitutes. Even a few nice DIY ones. But we've got to give Ellen Sundh props for the simplicity of her solution. While similar projects rely on accelerometers, which can be difficult for the budding hobbyist to work with, to monitor the angle of your body, Bad Posture sticks with a simple bend sensor to keep tabs on your spinal cord. The flexible plastic is arranged vertically in a fabric belt that also houses an Arduino, a Wave Shield from Adafruit and a push button for calibration. Sit at your optimal angle, press the button and you're ready to go. Bend too much and the Wave Shield plays a warning -- "bad posture!" Check out the video after the break to see it in action.

Spain's crisis turns families into squatters

Xavier Cervera / Panos for msnbc.com

Tony Cortes, who has been out of work for almost three years, and his partner Ana Valderrama have occupied an empty home in Terrassa, Spain, with their young daughters Jennifer and Ariadna.

By F. Brinley Bruton, msnbc.com

TERRASSA, Spain -- Ana Valderrama and Tony Cortes do not look like squatters.

The?suburban apartment they've illegally occupied since December is free of clutter.?Its stone floors shine while two?poster-sized pictures of daughters Jennifer, seven, and Ariadna, 11, hang on gleaming white walls.

Twelve months ago, life was very different.

Valderrama, 36, and Cortes, 38, had both been out of work for more than two years.?Unable to maintain payments on their 102,000-euro (around $128,000 at today?s exchange rates) mortgage, the couple?lost their home in this commuter town about 12 miles north of Barcelona.

"I was very depressed when I realized I may be on the street with my two girls," Cortes told msnbc.com.?"It?s a depression the whole family feels, a sort of Chinese torture."

Desperate to ensure they had a roof over their head, Valderrama, Cortes and 10 other families took possession of an empty apartment building. But life is still precarious. The family of four?now lives on 641 euros ($800)?a month in public assistance and they could face eviction at any time.

Destitution
While sophisticated and fun-loving Barcelona serves as the country's showcase to the world, Terrassa is?among the?many towns hiding Spain's shame: Despite boasting Europe's fourth-largest economy, hundreds of thousands have been forced into destitution by the country's?housing crash.

Photos: Faces of Spain's economic crisis

Many Spaniards?now exist on the margins of a society that just a few years ago promised them easy access to cars, holiday homes, trips abroad and regular tickets to professional?soccer games.

The crisis?was born out of?a mighty housing and construction bubble that saw house prices triple between 1995 and 2007. They've?fallen by at least a quarter since then.

'The country is on its knees': Ireland grapples with economic collapse

About one out of every four people in Spain is without a job, according to government statistics. However,?the large so-called "gray economy" mitigates the effects of unemployment, the IMF says.

In 2010, court evictions hit 100,000 ? four times the total?in 2007. About 200 homes are repossessed every day?across Spain, according to the Platform for People Affected by Mortgages (PAH) campaign group.

These repossessions continue despite a voluntary ethical code signed by many?banks that is intended to delay evictions by two years in cases of families with no income.?Still, an estimated 20 percent of the country?s unoccupied homes are now owned by banks, The Economist reported.

You don?t have to look very far to see the toll the crash has taken on people who have worked all their lives. ?

Before the crisis Juan Antonio Pache, 67, did not think of himself as poor.

His construction business once employed nine people. He borrowed money to build a house on land he already owned, and a few years later he borrowed more to extend it.

Xavier Cervera / Panos for msnbc.com

Juan Antonio Pache, 67, who lost a construction business that once boasted nine employees, is now receiving help from Catholic organization Caritas.

Pache's company thrived, he said, until 2007 when he noticed a fall-off in new business. By April 2008, income had decreased "vertically," he said.

"I made proposals, proposals and proposals but no projects came," he said. He fell behind on payments to Spain's equivalent of Social Security. Soon he could not afford his mortgage payments of around 3,000 euros a month.

Now the bank has seized?his house and land. He has lost his business and lives with his son in Sabadell, a city northwest of Barcelona.? ?

He doesn't receive a state pension, and his wife has moved in with family in another town.?

"All I've done is work. I've worked day and night on the highways. And after so much work I have no house and no pension," he said, standing very straight. "I don't know what kind of country this is."

Greek tragedy: Economic crisis sparks brain drain

With banks in a fierce competition for new customers and mortgages easy to come by, some borrowers doubtless took on too much debt during the boom years. But even as the crisis hit, politicians assured the public that all would be well.

In 2008, former Prime Minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero declared that Spain had "perhaps the most solid financial system in the world."

Infant malnutrition
The fact the crisis is taking a toll in a relatively wealthy part of Spain surprises those who work with the most vulnerable.

"We have noticed a huge increase in people asking for food assistance ? around three times more than a year ago," said Ester Soto, a manager at Terrassa's Red Cross homeless shelter.

Xavier Cervera / Panos for msnbc.com

Aida Abello and Ester Soto work at a Red Cross homeless shelter in Terrassa, Spain.

Fraying family networks and swinging cuts in social programs, as well as the worsening crisis, are the likely reasons for this growth, she said.

More startlingly, the Red Cross is also seeing evidence of infant malnutrition for the first time in decades, Soto added.

"And this is not a poor town," she said.

Spain's financial plight has taken center stage for European Union leaders who are tackling long-term plans for closer fiscal and banking union in a bid to strengthen the euro's foundations, after bailouts for Greece, Ireland and Portugal failed to end a 2-1/2-year old debt crisis.

On June 9, the European Union stepped in with the promise of a bank-bailout plan of up to 100 billion euros ($125 billion) and Spain formally requested the rescue on Monday. The original announcement failed to calm nerves as investors worried that it might not be enough and a wholesale bailout of Spain could be in the offing.

Spain to seek bailout; up to $125 billion on table

Paul De Grauwe, a prominent economist and professor at the London School of Economics, said that not only would the bailout announced in early June probably be inadequate, it was unlikely that European Union?s response would help ease the suffering of millions of Spaniards.

He also said the European Union's decision-making process, which is propelled by economic powerhouse Germany, is deeply undemocratic.

"Today it is a German politician who decides about Spain," he said. "They couldn?t care less about the Spanish unemployed. They will only care about unemployment if it is German unemployment. They will only care about youth unemployment if it is German youth unemployment."

Germany grows weary of being Europe's crutch

'I want to work'
Spanish youth unemployment stands at 50 percent, the highest in Europe. Such statistics are a fact of life for university student Marisol Martin.

"I want to work, have money, be independent and have my own place," the 19-year-old said. "I go on the Internet, send out resumes and resumes but nothing."

The only opportunities for people like her, she said, are unpaid work experience positions or poorly paid jobs in bars or restaurants.

So she is taking English classes and hopes to one day leave Spain.

Marisol Martin, right, has been encouraged by her father to leave Spain. Her friend Laia Moreno also has little optimism about the future in her homeland.

"My dad?s told me and my sister that what I have to do is get out and go to England," she said.

Martin's friend Laia Moreno, 18, lives with her mother. "I would like to have my own place and my own life," she said.

"I wanted to be a teacher," she adds. But for now, that dream has died and she's trying to get a driver's license so she can deliver pizzas.

'I had to sell everything'
Life isn't much better for many immigrants, with the unemployment in these communities hovering at around 35 percent. ?

Wilson Lopez left Ecuador more a decade ago in search of a better life for his wife and son. Nine years ago, he took on a mortgage of 109,000 euros, on which his wife Isabel and he made interest-only payments, Lopez said.

"I paid my mortgage loyally for nine years," the 63-year-old native of Guayaquil said during a protest organized by the PAH in Barcelona.

CSM: As Europe peers into economic chasm, Africa is rising

In 2010, Lopez lost his job as a security guard in a local hotel.

"I had to sell everything ? my wife's jewelry, our television, clothes ? everything," he said.

Lopez would like to hand over the apartment's keys to the bank and have done with it, he said. But he can't because most homeowners in Spain can be pursued for mortgage debt even after their properties have been repossessed.

Xavier Cervera / Panos for msnbc.com

Wilson Lopez, 63, is originally from Ecuador.

Instead, Lopez felt forced to extend the loan for another 40 years. He pointed out wryly that he will be over 100 when it runs its course.

"The government works for the banks but it does not help the people," he said.

This sort of disillusionment has grown as people impacted by the crisis watch the government bailing out banks while imposing widespread cuts to public services.

Amid this backdrop, the Platform for People Affected by Mortgages (PAH) has sprouted branches throughout the country.

In the last six months, PAH has suspended or delayed dozens of evictions by protesting outside foreclosed homes and helping people negotiate with their banks. Their highly public campaign has fed a wave of defiance and forced the government to promise relief for borrowers.

But the organization is not "superman," warned PAH organizer Guillem Domingo.

"This country?s politicians need to step-up, be courageous," he said.

Spanish bailout may prove to be stopgap measure

Spain's "indignados" or M-15, which helped spark the global "Occupy" movement, is also flexing its muscles. While huge public protests have largely died down, the group, along with the PAH, has seen an opportunity in the country's estimated one million empty homes for the growing number of homeless.

And on June 15, activists filed a case against the former management of one of the largest lenders Bankia, whose partial nationalization helped push Spain to seek the EU bailout.

The mass movement has helped raise tens of thousands of euros via crowdsourcing to bring a case against the bank.?

Ghost towns tell the story of Ireland's faded dream

The apartment illegally occupied by Cortes and Valderrama?is owned by CatalunyaCaixa, a regional bank. The unofficial residents' offers to pay rent to the bank have so far gone unanswered, PAH organizer Domingo said.

CatalunyaCaixa did not respond to a request for information or comment on their plans for the apartment building.

Still, defying the powers-that-be has energized Valderrama and Cortes.

"Every day that passes I feel stronger," Valderrama said. "I have gone through so much, and every time you do you become more powerful."

"I lost my shame many years ago," Cortes added and smiled.

No Name Farm/Ranch: Heavy

20 minutes ago we loaded Seamus and Matilda into separate trailers.? Matilda has gone to a 36 acre ranch in the hill country.? Her new owner is a livestock vet with two young sons who have already come over to feed and pet her.? She's going to have a good life.

Seamus was loaded into Dwayne's borrowed trailer.? Right now he is on his way to Smithville where he will be processed.? The emotions behind this decision are, obviously, complicated and raw.? I wrote at length about my initial decision to process one of our steers here and little of what was said then has changed for me now.

But today was much, much harder for me than butchering Rooney last year.? I've been sleepless for a week and wrestled with the knowledge that just as easily as I decided we would do this, I could decide not to.? That sort of power is frightening.? Although I was positive I wouldn't be able to help load him, I managed to calmly participate in what ended up being a very smooth loading from round pen to trailer.? While holding a bucket of feed over the fence to lure him forward, my upper arm snagged on the barbed wire.? There's a deep, open hole there that will probably scar.? It seems appropriate.

I came back inside and poured a tall glass of iced tea, sat down at the computer and wrote a note to my sister - if we all had to do this each time we wanted a hamburger, our diets would be dramatically different.? BBQ ribs would be more of a luxury and a blessing.? There's nothing sterile or simple about consuming meat.? Most of us interact with the food chain at the very end, after all the dirty work has been done and without much consideration for everything that went into its beginning, its middle - and its end. Although I felt burdened this week with my own personal dilemmas about ending a life, it thrust me right into the middle of the food chain, in a way.? It makes me absolutely conscious about how much of that precious beef I will consume, and how I will prepare it.? It makes me think twice every time I'm eating out and see meat on the menu.? How was that animal treated?? What did it eat?? Do I want to support that?

Some people in my life were horrified I decided to process Seamus.? I kept much more distance from Rooney who wasn't such a nice animal to begin with; a fact that somehow made his death more palatable for others wrestling with the notion of "eating a pet."? I was horrified, too, when we first discussed the fact that Matilda needed a new home, the reality of hay prices, the fact that this animal was always intended for slaughter.? I broke down twice.? I cried when he was driven away, then I came inside and washed my gouged arm and silently thanked whatever forces came together to allow us this piece of dirt and these animals.

Many of our choices around here regarding animals are heavy.? They should be.? This is not the last animal we will raise for food - for us, our families and our friends.? This isn't the last time I'll lean against the kitchen counter allowing myself two whole minutes of quiet tears.? Like last year, I'm full with gratitude for his time here on the farm and his contribution as food for this table and others.??

It?s officially time to break out the Deux Deux Deuxs.

ESPN has announced that Chris Berman and Trent Dilfer will call the second game of the season-opening Monday Night Football doubleheader, when the Raiders host the Chargers.

The official announcement includes a ?podcast? from Berman, who likely still thinks that term is a reference to the film Invasion of the Body Snatchers, in which he explains how the decision came to be.

?Our president John Skipper, our executive V.P. of production John Wildhack, we were together, and midway through an interesting evening they said, ?We?d like you to call the second Monday night game,?? Berman says.

?I went, ?Now, wow.? There?s something I never really thought about.?? Of course, I?ve thought about calling NFL games my whole life, but given what I do and Sunday duties, the normal ones, and it?s Week One of the season and you get your hands full and we?re all excited and we?re trying to do our best in the studio, etc.? I didn?t see it coming.

?I said, ?I gotta give you guys credit.? So, you understand I haven?t called a football game in a while, although I?ve called many baseball games and U.S. Open golf, etc., etc.? I was really surprised and excited about hearing it, to be honest with you.? Really excited.? It?s nice to be surprised after 32 years, it really is.?

This explanation implies that Berman had done no lobbying whatsoever for the gig.? Which some people will believe, and plenty of people won?t.

To get ready for the regular-season assignment, Berman and Dilfer will handle the Titans-Cardinals game on August 23.

Per ESPN, Berman will host Sunday NFL Countdown on Week One, then fly to Oakland to prepare for the Monday night game.? There?s no specific word yet on who will replace Berman for The Blitz, Berman?s SportsCenter-embedded review of game highlights with Tom Jackson.

And that?s perhaps the real news.? For the first time in a quarter-century, someone other than Berman will get the opportunity to narrate the extended highlights packages from the games of the Sunday that was.? To give up those reins, Berman must have really wanted to get in to the booth.

UPDATE 10:50 a.m. ET:? ESPN spokesman Bill Hofheimer says that the host of The Blitz has not yet been determined.? With Berman absent, Suzy Kolber will host Monday Night Countdown from Bristol.

How To Cut Your Grocery Costs By 10% or more - Debt Consolidation

by Kirk Carlson on June 25, 2012

Woman with groceries and register tapeIt seems to us that our grocery bill gets higher every month. There are only three of us but were probably spending better than $600 a month on ?groceries.?

The reason I put the word groceries? in quotes is because what a lot of people don?t think about is how much of our grocery bills are nonfood items. In our case, there may be only 2 adults and one child in the house but there are also three dogs that consume a total of 14 cans of dog food a week. If we were to subtract that from our $600 grocery bill, we would probably find it?s actually much closer to $550 a month. And if we subtracted everything we spend on laundry detergents, shampoos and other health and beauty products, our true grocery bill would probably be less than $400 a month.

Become a coupon junkie

The surest way to cut your grocery bill is by using as many coupons as you can get your hands on. We?ve seen many coupons that can save you as much as $.50 or even $1.00 on items that you would buy anyway. If you have a computer you can go online and find printable coupons from the stores where you shop (such as Kroger?s or Target) or from sites like The Coupon Clippers (the couponclippers.com) where you can buy coupons in bulk. For example, if you have a baby and use a lot of diapers you could buy 10 coupons and save nearly $10 on your next 10 purchases.

Make it a game

Some families actually make a game out of coupons and give a prize to the family member who finds the best or most coupons a week. Don?t think for a minute that it?s not worth using coupons and save just $.50 on an item as this can eventually grow into a much larger amount than you might imagine. We know families who are saving as much as $20 a week simply by using coupons.

Plan your menus around the ?specials?

Look for coupons or BOGOs (buy one, get one) on food items that you can plan menus around. As an example of this, if you find an especially good price on chicken or pork, plan a meal around these meats. You can surround the chicken or pork with vegetables that are on sale (or have coupons) and put together a nice meal for $7 or less?and feed a family of four.

Make a list and stick to it

One of the biggest mistakes people make in grocery shopping is to do it without a list. While you might think that you can just go to the store and choose the items you will need for the following three or five days, I can promise one of two things will happen. You will either forget five or six important items, which will mean yet another trip to the store. Or you will end up buying a lot of ?impulse? items. It?s really important to figure out your menus for the next few days, make a list of all the items you will need to fix those meals and then never deviate from your list.

Never shop before a meal

Oh, and one other thing. Never go grocery shopping before you eat lunch or dinner. Statistics show that the hungrier you are when you go grocery shopping, the higher your grocery bill will be. And that?s a fact.

Making the Most of Fatherhood | MemphisConnect

Hall of Fame baseball player Harmon Killebrew told a story about how his father kept his eye on the ball when it came to raising his children. ?My father used to play with my brother and me in the yard,? Killebrew said. ?Mother would come out and say, ?You?re tearing up the grass.? ?We?re not raising grass,? Dad would reply. ?We?re raising boys.??

And so it is. Since we?ve just celebrated Father?s Day, it?s worth remembering that there is nothing that we do in our lives more important and more fulfilling than raising children that are healthy ? physically, emotionally, socially, and cognitively. When we do it right, we touch the future, because secure, nurtured, disciplined, and confident children have their best chances to become successful later in life and as they become parents themselves.

At a time when child-rearing is hard even in families where both parents are present, almost half (47%) of the families in our community with children under 18 have no husband present. It?s a fact of life that creates additional risks for so many children in Memphis and Shelby County.

We?re not saying that single parents can?t succeed. In fact, it?s inspirational that so many do in the face of difficult hardships and almost insurmountable obstacles. That said, we know from research that single parent households and poverty too often go hand-in-hand, resulting in less than optimal brain development for children whose brains grow to 80% of their adult sizes before their third birthdays.

We?re also not saying that a father in the house is a magic bullet. The only magic is in a father who takes his responsibilities seriously and who is committed to being a positive presence in his children?s lives. As the aphorism says, any man can be a father, but it takes someone special to be a dad.

In recent years, the results of research have shifted from the presence of a father to the sensitivity of a father. Rather than the just the quantity of time spent with their children, it?s about the quality of the time that fathers spend with their children.

Fathers matter. And yet, a large percentage of them are not involved or engaged in the social and academic development of their children. One in every three children in the U.S. live in a father-absent home and that percentage is much higher in our community. The consequences for our city and our nation are profound, because without the benefits received by children from positive fathers or father figures, risks for school dropout, substance abuse, aggressiveness, and teen pregnancy increase.

So, take a few minutes to answer these questions to determine if you are doing your best to be a positive influence in the first three years of your child?s life:

  • Have you visited your child?s school or child care center? When was the last time you met with your child?s teacher?
  • When was the last time you read your child a story? Did you ask your child questions about the characters and the plot?
  • When was the last time you helped your child with his homework?
  • When was the last time you praised your child and hugged her?
  • Do you get on the floor and play with your child in activities that build a strong relationship?
  • When was the last time you took your child ? just the two of you ? to a park or the zoo?
  • Can you find a hobby, craft, or activity that you can share with your child?
  • Do you fully co-parent with your wife/child?s mother?
  • Are you a strong role model for how to deal with conflict and do you eliminate toxic stress from your child?s life?
  • Do you teach your child new words and engage in conversations with him?
  • Do you accept that your child isn?t exactly like you?
  • Do you allow your child to make some mistakes?
  • Do you show unconditional love?
  • Most of all, do you lead by example?

In case you?re not sure about the return on this investment, just consider that involved fathers strengthen early development of their children by building better problem-solving skills; by encouraging them to keep trying when facing a new challenge; by dealing with every day frustrations, by making them feel secure enough to explore the world around them; by developing greater confidence, and by making them 75% less likely to be a teen parent and 80% less likely to spend time in jail.

In support of strong fathers, we are sponsoring Fatherhood Friday at the Memphis Zoo on June 29 and Mayor Wharton?s training camp for dads on Saturday, June 30. Register for the training camp here. In addition, we are sponsoring and will have a table with information at the Ultimate Family Reunion at Levitt Shell at 3 p.m., Saturday, June 23. The Reunion is hosted by Soul Classics 103.5 and will have live performances from ?your favorite Old School artists,? food, and prizes. Learn more about these events here.

Finally, here?s our list of ?10 Things Every Child Should Experience Before Kindergarten.? We hope you?ll put all ten on your to-do list and join us this month as we celebrate the power of fathers and the way they transform young live
