Subtropical Storm Beryl forms off S.C. coast

MIAMI?? Tropical storm warnings were issued from northeast Florida to South Carolina as a cluster of storms gathered strength Saturday and was expected to become Tropical Storm Beryl over the Memorial Day weekend.

The system's maximum sustained winds were at 45 mph. But they are expected to increase as the system, now Subtropical Storm Beryl, moves over the Atlantic.

Gusts up to 55 mph and 2 to 4 inches of rain were predicted.

Tropical-storm force winds extend 115 miles out from the system's center.

The system was about 240 miles from Charleston, S.C., at 8 a.m. ET and was swirling toward the Southeast coast, the National Hurricane Center said in a public advisory notice.

"A little strengthening is possible during the next day or so," it added.

The storm is forecast to eventually turn back toward the Atlantic and away from the Gulf of Mexico, where U.S. oil and gas operations are clustered.?

Subtropical storms usually have a broader wind field than tropical storms and their shower and thunderstorm activity is more removed from the storm's center.

A tropical storm warning was issued for an area stretching from northeast Florida to South Carolina. The warning means that tropical storm conditions are expected within the area over the next 36 hours.

Meteorologists said to expect heavy rain and higher than normal tides and rip currents, Jacksonville, Fla. TV channel WJXT reported.

Beryl was moving north but expected to veer west-southwest or southwest on Saturday, the hurricane center said. The storm's center is expected to be near or over the Southeastern U.S. coast on Sunday, it said.

Beryl is the second named storm of the Atlantic hurricane season, which officially runs from June 1 to November 30, although it is not uncommon for storms to form outside that time frame.

Female gamers more likely to play app versions of console games ...

ACCORDING to research from a video game price comparison and marketplace site, female gamers are more likely to download and play Smartphone app versions of video games originally designed for consoles.

Smartphone versions of popular console games are becoming increasingly common in today's 'app' culture, and according to the results of a new study by a video game price comparison and marketplace site, female video game fans are most likely to download these games on their Smartphones.

The study, conducted by www.Playr2.com, aimed to look more into gamers' attitudes towards 'gaming on the move' following last month's release of the portable Vita console. 1,231 self-confessed gamers subsequently took part, all aged 18 and over.

Those taking part in the study were asked if they owned a Smartphone with access to downloadable applications, to which 83% of the respondents answered "yes". These respondents were then asked whether or not they had downloaded 'app versions of console video games' on their Smartphones, to which just over two fifths, 41%, answered "yes".

Of those who had downloaded an app version of a console video game on their Smartphone, 56% were female; compared to the remaining 44% who were male. The results of the study therefore suggested that app versions of video games are more popular amongst female gamers; with more women having downloaded them on their Smartphones than men.

Those taking part who had downloaded app versions of console video games on their Smartphone were subsequently asked to specify what games they had downloaded, of which the ten most common games were as follows:

1) Tiger Woods
2) Tetris
3) Grand Theft Auto 3
4) Assassin's Creed
5) Sonic the Hedgehog
6) FIFA 12
7) The Sims
8) Need for Speed
9) Command and Conquer
10) Worms 2

When asked why they had downloaded a console game app, the most popular answer amongst all respondents was 'in order to have a portable version of the game'; with 51% of gamers taking part claiming this as their main reason for downloading. In contrast, of those who hadn't downloaded an app version of a video game, the main reason for 67% was the fear of a 'poor gaming experience'.
The study asked gamers if they believed that Smartphones would ever replace video game consoles as a platform for gaming, to which that vast majority, 74%, said "no". When asked why, more than two thirds, 67%, simply believed that the gaming experience of playing a video game on a Smartphone could never match that of a console.

Simon Kilby, Founder of Playr2.com, commented on the findings: "Gaming is becoming more and more portable, and certainly with handheld and Smartphone developments, it's easier than ever to have access to your favourite video games on the move. With this survey we wanted to look into how gamers view app versions of console games, and it was interesting to find that more female gamers had downloaded them than men, with most simply wanting a 'portable' game."

He continued: "According to the results, most gamers fear a diminished quality of game when downloading an app version; and it's not hard to see why. Whilst developers have brought apps a long way, the gaming experience on a Smartphone is far from that of a console; but it's undeniable that they're a great fix whilst on the move."

With Baylor's 11-2 win over Kansas State on Friday, the Bears broke the NCAA record for most combined wins by one school's football, men's basketball, women's basketball and baseball teams in one academic year.

JERUSALEM: International music icon Madonna arrived in Israel on Friday to kick off her hotly anticipated world tour with a sold-out performance in Tel Aviv.

She arrived amid tight security on a chartered El Al flight from New York, accompanied by partner Brahim Zaibat, her four children and an entourage of 70, local media reported.

Thursday?s Tel Aviv show is the first of 84 dates across Europe and the Americas, according to her website.They are to be followed by a visit to Australia, where Madonna has not appeared in 20 years, it said.

The tour ? Madonna?s first since her wildly successful ?Sticky and Sweet?outing in 2008 and 2009 ? will support her new album ?MDNA.?She last performed in Israel in 2009, on the Sticky and Sweet tour.

During that visit she met Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and visited the Western Wall in the Old City of Jerusalem, the holiest site where Jews are allowed to pray.

She visited Israel in 2004 and 2007 on private trips.

?Curtain Up? is a weekly performing arts review column exploring the vast and dynamic theater world in Atlanta.

I cry quite easily but, upon attending Dad?s Garage ?TheatreSports?, I was drawn to tears not by sorrow, rather all-stops-out, on-the spot, no-looking-back comedy. From a young grandfather?s bedtime story of a squirrel metamorphosing into a magical tomato told to his granddaughter ? a lucky, first-time audience member ? to a talk show skit of a two-person-yet-one-man expert on tacos ? ab-so-lut-ely not chim-i-chan-gas ? the theatre team at Dad?s Garage has indeed got their act together.

Dad?s Garage Theatre Company ? five-years-in-a-row winner of Creative Loafing?s ?Best of Atlanta Theatre? and ?Best Improv Troupe? ? is a must-see. The main reason for me was that it was incredibly stress relieving. My eyes were watering and my face was welded somewhat painfully into a permanent toothy grin. Moreover, I got the greatest ab workout I?ve had in weeks. Laughter is the elixir of life, and by golly did Dad?s Garage have me feeling its medicinal cure. I was so enthralled by the skits and games that I thoroughly forgot my worries of school, work, and life outside of the players performing upon the stage of that tiny auditorium. My friend, a fellow SCAD student, felt exactly the same and doubled over so often I thought he might be having a seizure. Time and time again, however, he came back to the surface, whooping and hollering enthusiastically beside me at the unbelievable comedy occurring on stage.

One of the greatest elements of this theatre is that because it is so cozy, the whole audience can comfortably get involved, ?warming up especially after a few beverages sold before and during the 15 minute intermission. ?TheatreSports? runs as long as the average full-length feature film, one hour and a half, and every minute is worth it. The referee host primes the audience with a half hour duel between six new performers deemed ?The Rookies? and, for the remaining time, thrusts six full-time improvisers to the stage to battle for audience applause in two teams of three. The games include ?Act Harder!? and many other face-offs, concluding with one-liner act ?I Knew She Was a _____?s Daughter Because ____? which I?m sure you can imagine was totally terrible yet incredibly hilarious due to the spontaneity of professions and epiphanies. Although the show is for adults, Dad?s Garage does their best to ?keep things in line? when necessary by providing ?the infamous Scum Box? for the referee host to assign to too-naughty jokesters.

?TheatreSports? is Dad?s Garage?s longest-running performance and, as they?ve found, has been ?an audience favorite for years.? Next time you?re near Little Five Points or have a night to blow on the town, spend wisely ? invest in tickets to the priceless TheatreSports or check out their newer acts like ?Musicals Suck, The Musical,? ?Improv Revolution? or ?Super Mega Happy Fun Time Improv Show,? all running through June or all-summer long.
