Russia chides ally Syria over massacre of 108

BEIRUT (AP) ? A weekend massacre of more than 100 people emerged as a potential turning point in the Syrian crisis Monday, galvanizing even staunch ally Russia to take an unusually hard line against President Bashar Assad's regime.

Analysts say Russia may be warning Syrian President Bashar Assad that he needs to change course or lose Moscow's support, which has been a key layer of protection for the regime in Damascus over the course of the uprising, which began in March 2011.

Russia has grown increasingly critical of the Syrian regime in recent months, but Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov's latest comments were unusually strong. Although he said opposition forces have terrorists among them, he put the blame for 15 months of carnage primarily on Assad's government.

"The government bears the main responsibility for what is going on," Lavrov said in Moscow following a meeting with British Foreign Secretary William Hague. "Any government in any country bears responsibility for the security of its citizens."

Alexei Malashenko, a Middle East expert with the Carnegie Moscow Center, said Lavrov's comments suggest Russia may be backing away from its long-standing support for Damascus.

"Bashar Assad is driving himself and Russia into a corner," Malashenko said. "Bashar has definitely gotten the sense that he may lose Russia's sympathy and he may step back a bit."

It is not clear whether Assad's forces were exclusively to blame for the slaughter of 108 people Friday in Houla, a collection of poor farming villages in Homs province. The U.N. said 49 children and 34 women were among the dead; some had bullet holes through their heads.

The U.N. Security Council blamed Syrian forces for artillery and tank shelling of residential areas, but it did not clearly state who was responsible for the close-range shooting deaths and "severe physical abuse" of civilians.

Activists from the area say the army pounded the villages with artillery and clashed with local rebels. They said pro-regime gunmen later stormed the area, doing the bulk of the killing by gunning down men in the streets and stabbing women and children in their homes.

The Syrian government rejected that narrative entirely, saying soldiers were attacked in their bases and fought back in self-defense, but did not leave their bases.

Russia blamed both the regime and the rebels for the Houla massacre.

"Both sides have obviously had a hand in the deaths of innocent people, including several dozen women and children," Lavrov said. "This area is controlled by the rebels, but it is also surrounded by the government troops."

He said Russia has no interest in propping up Assad's regime, but wants Syria to guide its own transition under a plan brokered by special envoy Kofi Annan.

"We don't support the Syrian government, we support Kofi Annan's plan," Lavrov said.

Moscow's pro-Syria stance has been motivated in part by its strategic and defense ties, including weapons sales, with Damascus. Russia also rejects what it sees as a world order dominated by the U.S.

But as the country spirals toward chaos, Russia could scale back that support.

Losing Russian support could be disastrous for Assad because his crackdown has left him almost completely isolated internationally. Russia and China have stood by him so far, using their veto power in the past to block U.N. resolutions against him.

Hilal Khashan, a political science professor at the American University of Beirut, said the Houla massacre appears to be ushering in a change in Russia's position.

"There is a shift and the momentum against the regime is gathering," Khashan said. "The momentum is building and the Russians are not blocking the rising momentum."

The Syrian conflict is among the most explosive of the Arab Spring, in part because of Syria's allegiances to powerful forces including Lebanon's Hezbollah and Shiite powerhouse Iran.

Activists say as many as 12,000 people have been killed since the uprising began in March 2011. The U.N. put the toll as of March, a year into the uprising, at 9,000 but the count is out of date as many hundreds more have died since.

It is virtually impossible to independently verify the death toll in Syria.

Annan's peace plan, which calls for a cease-fire and dialogue, has been faltering for weeks, but many analysts see it as a way to unify the international community behind a single proposal.

Western leaders have pinned their hopes on Annan's diplomatic pressure, with the U.S. and others unwilling to get deeply involved in another Arab nation in turmoil.

Annan arrived in Damascus Monday for talks with Assad and other officials and called on "every individual with a gun" in Syria to lay down arms, saying he was horrified by the Houla massacre.

"This message of peace is not only for the government, but for everyone with a gun."

Britain's Prime Minister David Cameron and French President Francois Holland spoke on the phone and expressed their desire to work with Russia to resolve the crisis in Syria. A spokeswoman for Downing Street said Cameron and Hollande agreed to act together to "bring an end to the bloody suppression of the Syrian people."

Syria has brushed off nearly all international pressure since the uprising against Assad's regime erupted. Activists reported fresh violence Monday, saying troops shelled several neighborhoods in Hama, killing at least 24 people.

Assad denies that he is fighting a popular uprising, saying terrorists and armed gangs are driving the unrest. His supporters point to a string of suicide attacks to support their claims that foreign terrorists ? not reform-seekers ? are behind the violence.

There are widespread fears that al-Qaida and other extremists may be joining the fray in Syria and exploiting the chaos there, but the opposition and the rebel force in Syria say they have nothing to do with any terrorist attacks.

Syria's uprising began with mostly peaceful calls for change in one of the most repressive regimes in the Middle East. But as the government cracked down on opponents with increasingly deadly force, many protesters began taking up arms.

The conflict has grown dangerously militarized. Rebel fighters say they are targeting soldiers and military installations to chip away at the regime's power and protect civilians. Now the international community has nearly run out of options for halting the slide toward civil war.

Simply ejecting your rear from the couch means your hand will spend less time digging into a bag of chocolate chip cookies.

That is the simple but profound finding of a new Northwestern Medicine study, which reports simply changing one bad habit has a domino effect on others. Knock down your sedentary leisure time and you'll reduce junk food and saturated fats because you're no longer glued to the TV and noshing. It's a two-for-one benefit because the behaviors are closely related.

The study also found the most effective way to rehab a delinquent lifestyle requires two key behavior changes: cutting time spent in front of a TV or computer screen and eating more fruits and vegetables.

"Just making two lifestyle changes has a big overall effect and people don't get overwhelmed," said Bonnie Spring, a professor of preventive medicine at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine, and lead author of the study published in Archives of Internal Medicine.

"Americans have all these unhealthy behaviors that put them at high risk for heart disease and cancer, but it is hard for them and their doctors to know where to begin to change those unhealthy habits," Spring said. "This approach simplifies it."

With this simplified strategy, people are capable of making big lifestyle changes in a short period of time and maintaining them, according to the study.

Spring wanted to figure out the most effective way to spur people to change common bad health habits: eating too much saturated fat and not enough fruits and vegetables, spending too much sedentary leisure time and not getting enough physical activity.

She and colleagues randomly assigned 204 adult patients, ages 21 to 60 years old, with all those unhealthy habits into one of four treatments. The treatments were: increase fruit/vegetable intake and physical activity, decrease fat and sedentary leisure, decrease fat and increase physical activity, and increase fruit/vegetable intake and decrease sedentary leisure.

During the three weeks of treatment, patients entered their daily data into a personal digital assistant and uploaded it to a coach who communicated as needed by telephone or email.

Participants could earn $175 for meeting goals during the three-week treatment phase. But when that phase was completed, patients no longer had to maintain the lifestyle changes in order to be paid. They were simply asked to send data three days a month for six months and received $30 to $80 per month.

"We said we hope you'll continue to keep up these healthy changes, but you no longer have to keep them up to be compensated," Spring said.

The results over the next six months amazed Spring. "We thought they'd do it while we were paying them, but the minute we stopped they'd go back to their bad habits," she said. "But they continued to maintain a large improvement in their health behaviors."

From baseline to the end of treatment to the end of the six-month follow-up, the average servings of fruit/vegetables changed from 1.2 to 5.5 to 2.9; average minutes per day of sedentary leisure went from 219.2 to 89.3 to 125.7 and daily calories from saturated fat from 12 percent to 9.4 percent to 9.9 percent.

About 86 percent of participants said once they made the change, they tried to maintain it. There was something about increasing fruits and vegetables that made them feel like they were capable of any of these changes," Spring said. "It really enhanced their confidence."

"We found people can make very large changes in a very short amount of time and maintain them pretty darn well," Spring said. "It's a lot more feasible than we thought."

Design and Features
One of the advantages of a dedicated camcorder over a smartphone or digital camera is the comfortable form factor. The M50 is a perfect cylinder, measuring 2.5 by 2.7 by 4.8 inches (HWD) and weighing 10.9 ounces. It's neither too big nor too small, and fits nicely into the palm of the hand. A typical point and shoot, like our Editors' Choice Canon PowerShot S100 ($429.99, 4.5 stars), weighs around 5 to 7 ounces, making it a bit more difficult to hold steady when recording.

The body is constructed from glossy and matte black plastics, with some metal highlights and elements. The Record button sits to the right of the removable, rechargeable battery, and is easily accessible by thumb. The zoom rocker is positioned on top, in front of the mini advanced accessory shoe. To the left of the zoom rocker is the power button, and in the recess behind the LCD are Home, Video Snap (to take a quick 4-second video), and Playback buttons. Below those buttons are a mini USB and mini HDMI port, as well as a 3.5mm headphone jack and 3.5mm mic jack. Below the hand strap is a single card slot that accepts SD, SDHC, and SDXC cards. The M50 comes with 8GB of built-in memory.

The 3-inch LCD is touch enabled, and all the controls can be accessed through a series of touch menus. The 230k-dot screen resolution is too grainy to appreciate the HD video being captured, and it was a bit dim in bright sunlight. Touch input is decent, though it's difficult to be precise with some of the smaller virtual buttons?for example, setting up Wi-Fi is a pain due to the cramped virtual keyboard. The built-in Wi-Fi is a nice touch, though, as you can wirelessly transfer video from the camcorder to your computer or to YouTube and Facebook through a free app for iOS devices.?The lack of physical controls makes it a bit cumbersome to make advanced changes to exposure, white balance, or focus.

Performance
Canon equipped the M50 with a?1/3-inch HD CMOS Pro sensor with a 10x optical zoom lens that covers a 43.4-436mm focal length (35mm equivalent). The "Pro" tag denotes greater low light performance, with an f/1.8 aperture at its widest point, which narrows down to f/3 when zoomed all the way in. The lower-end Vixia HF R300?($349.99, 3.5 stars) packs a 32x optical zoom factor, with a 38.5-1,232mm focal length (35mm equivalent), but uses a 1/4.85-inch CMOS sensor. The larger sensor on the M50 means larger pixels, which equates to better low light performance. The R300 is a bit more versatile, both at its widest and most zoomed in, but the low light performance is vastly superior with the M50. ?

There are a number of recording modes, with the highest quality set at 24Mbps and full HD video in MXP mode. It's not true progressive video, but rather uses 60 interlaced fields per second that are then encoded to 30 frames per second. There is a Cinema Mode that artificially makes the video appear to move at 24 frames per second, the standard for film projects, but it still isn't truly progressive. At its highest setting, video is recorded in AVCHD, while lower quality clips can be saved as MP4s, but those are limited to 30 minutes each. ?

For most, the full Auto mode should suffice, as navigating the touch screen menus and adjusting settings is not especially intuitive or precise. In my tests, the autofocus was accurate, but it had some trouble keeping a lock on objects when fully zoomed in, switching focus to the background intermittently. Auto white balance and exposure were surprisingly fast and accurate, though panning across a room with varied lighting caused very noticeable shifts in color?though that's pretty typical with Auto modes. The M50 has a Powered Image Stabilization mode and a Dynamic auto mode. Both worked well, though I would keep it in Powered mode if you're planning on using the zoom extensively. One minor gripe: When at its telephoto reach, the image stabilization gave the video a bit of a dreamy wobble effect, reminiscent of HDTVs with high refresh rates.

Video looked sharp in MXP mode, with the M50 capturing fine details and textures at both its widest angle and telephoto reach. Image noise is kept to a minimum, and even in low-light settings, the quality was good. Dynamic range was acceptable, though the dark spots of shadows were a bit too dark, losing too much detail, while bright spots remained properly exposed. The lower-priced R300 was able to capture comparably sharp video, though its low-light performance lagged behind the M50. Color accuracy was also a bit more problematic on the R300, as colors tended to appear cooler than in real life.

Audio quality was decent, though not entirely impressive. The microphone picked up voices loud and clear from reasonable distances, but was also prone to wind interference. Luckily, there are microphone and headphone jacks for better audio quality and more precise monitoring.

Many people will consider their smartphones or point-and-shoots to be capable replacements for a standalone camcorder. When compared with our Editors' Choice high-end point-and-shoot, the Canon PowerShot S100, the M50 is in the same realm on sharpness, but the real advantage with the M50 is smoother looking video in moving shots. The S100's video is choppier through movements, even slow pans, and the auto-exposure can cause instances of overexposure that appear as quick flashes. That same choppiness plagues smartphone and tablet video, while neither of those is really suited for anything but ideal lighting situations. In terms of still photos, the M50 can capture JPEG images, but at 2-megapixel resolution,?the quality is mediocre. The S100 pumps out beautiful photos, and smartphone cameras are starting to take great stills too.

Conclusions
The Canon Vixia HF M50 captures pleasantly crisp, fluid video in a variety of lighting situations, with an easy-to-use and accurate fully automatic mode. Extras like built-in flash memory and Wi-Fi connectivity sweeten the deal, but the $649.99 price tag is a bit steep when you consider that good compact interchangeable lens cameras can be had for the same price. The lower priced Vixia HF R300 can capture similarly good-looking video, but suffers a bit in terms of lighting range. The R300 does, however, have the advantage of a wider angle lens and 32x optical zoom. With such a compact body, some sacrifices in manual controls had to be made. Luckily, the fully automatic mode is fast and accurate, though more advanced shooters may find the touch-screen navigation too cumbersome and imprecise. An interchangeable lens digital camera like our Editors' Choice Sony Alpha NEX-C3?($649.99, 4.5 stars) takes some truly stunning still images, but its video capture tops out at 720p. If you plan on playing your home movies or video projects on large HDTVs it might make sense to pony up the extra cash for a dedicated camcorder. However, unless the familiar camcorder form factor is a must-have, a solid digital camera like the NEX-C3 or the Olympus PEN E-PM1?($499.99, 4 stars) are more versatile.

Sixteen-year-old Shouryya Ray, a student from Dresden who was born in Calcutta, submitted a paper proposing analytical solutions to two problems in particle dynamics.

A research paper that claims to fill in a gap in Isaac Newton's formulas for the physics of falling objects has drawn worldwide attention to a 16-year-old student in Germany, but physicists are reserving judgment until they've seen the proof.

The focus of the buzz is Shouryya Ray, an Indian-born student who won second prize this month in the math and informatics category for Germany's Jugend Forscht student science competition. Ray tackled a couple of longstanding puzzlers for physics students: How do you account for air resistance in calculating the trajectory of ball thrown out at an angle? And precisely how does a ball thrown against the wall rebound?

The first question relates to Newton's law of universal gravitation: In his Principia Mathematica, published in 1687, Newton laid out how a gravitational field would affect a thrown object ??but he didn't account for the effect of air resistance. Through the centuries, physicists have used numerical approximations to take drag into account, and when computers come into play, those approximations can be incredibly precise. But Ray said he wanted to come up with a set of formulas that could calculate the effect directly, even though his instructors said that had never been done.

"I asked myself: Why can't it work?" he told the German newspaper Die Welt.

That's what Ray tried to do in his prize-winning paper, titled "Analytical?Solution of Two?Fundamental?Unsolved?Problems of?Particle Dynamics" ("Analytische L?sung von zwei ungel?sten fundamentalen Partikeldynamikproblemen"). In addition to the falling-ball problem, Ray took on a puzzler of more recent vintage, having to do with the description of a particle's collision with a wall, as described by 19th-century theory. But it was the "kid-trumps-Newton" angle that really stirred up a buzz.

Die Welt's report came early in the game: The Daily Mail and?The Sunday Times of London picked up the story, adding to the sensation. The idea that a teenager could figure out something that Newton didn't is irresistible ? particularly when the teen is an immigrant from Calcutta who says he's no genius. But the story just sparked more questions among inquiring minds in such online hangouts as?Physics Forum,?Slashdot?and Reddit: What exactly did Ray do? And were these problems really such mysteries to solve?

That's a challenge, because Ray's paper was a school project submitted for a contest, and thus not subject to the publication process and peer review that professional work typically goes through. For that reason, the experts are reluctant to weigh in.

"This story seems rather suspicious," Richard Fitzpatrick, a physicist at the University of Texas in Austin, told me in an email. "None of the news reports give any details of the calculation. None of the people who hailed Shouryya Ray as a genius are scientists, and none of?them give the impression that they have seen the calculation in question. It is impossible to gauge the scientific merit of the calculation until it is made public."

Syracuse University physicist Simon Catterall said in an email that calculating the trajectories of falling objects hadn't been seen as a particularly grand puzzle of physics. "The background given in the article seems genuine enough, so it may indeed be true, but I haven't heard anything about a new solution to a Newtonian problem on the grapevine," he told me.

Based on what's come out about the work so far, the consensus seems to be that Ray has done amazing work for his age ? and if he had to choose between his passion for science and his passion for soccer, he'd be well-advised to pick math and physics.?His paper putting forth an "analytical solution to two fundamental unsolved problems" may not be the breakthrough that some of the reports have made it out to be, but that doesn't take anything away from the teenager's achievement.

"What Ray has worked out, almost certainly independently, would definitely put him in the 99th percentile amongst his peers and maybe even more," one Redditor observed.

By the way, the first-place winner in the math and informatics category, Julius Kunze, wrote a paper on relativistic ray tracing. But that's a different story...?

Oxford University physicist James Binney: "Doesn't sound too interesting to me. The resistance of air to the ball won't be susceptible to simple analytic formulae ??if the ball is of ordinary size, [greater than a centimeter] radius ??the flow around it will be in the high Reynolds-number regime and involve a thin boundary layer. Such flows were extensively studied from the last part of the 19th century, so it's true that they lie beyond Newton's knowledge. A good approximation will be to take the drag force as pi r^2 rho v^2, where r is the radius of the ball, v its speed and rho the density of air. I'm unaware of a puzzle regarding bouncing balls. In detail the bounce will depend on the physical properties of the ball ??as any squash player knows. Usually one adopts a coefficient of restitution.?To be impressed we need to know details."

University of Bristol physicist Michael Berry: "Without seeing the details of what Ray has claimed, it's impossible to comment intelligently. It depends crucially on how he has modeled the air resistance. But a falling body with air resistance (however modeled) is hardly a 'fundamental unsolved problem,' as he seems to think. There's a powerful aroma of hype."??

Middletown residents gather for Memorial Day parade

MIDDLETOWN -- A puppy named Otis showed up Saturday for a Memorial Day parade at Middletown Park. All dressed in red, white and blue, Otis even had a small wagon to ride in.

The 9-week-old pug needed a wagon to keep up with a long line of children riding bicycles, tricycles and scooters. They had all gathered with their parents and grandparents for a parade and ice cream on one of the hottest days so far this year.

Saturday's heat may have irritated some adults, but Otis and the children appeared not to mind. Their focus was on being in a parade. Also featured were hula-hoopers and Cub Scouts.

"Memorial Day is all about honoring our war dead," said Scoutmaster Bill Turner, who led the procession.

Otis' owner, Amy Gray, stood in the sun with her family as people admired the pet.

Her daughter Destiny Gray, 5, made sure parade-goers knew who Otis belonged to.

"This is my puppy," Destiny said as she twirled in a dress adorned with stars.

The Grays made the trip from their home in Pennsylvania to Middletown for a weekend visit with family. Otis came along for the ride.

Both Destiny and Otis hopped into the wagon as more children gathered for the parade.

Terry Pepin, of Middletown, brought her granddaughters, Kaitlin and Sara. Pepin said the parade doubled as an educational moment for her family. It was important for the girls to understand the meaning of Memorial Day, she said.

"We just want to start our weekend right," Pepin said.

Each year, the Middletown Arts and Activities Committee hosts a Memorial Day event for local families. Last year, about 300 area residents showed up, committee members said.

Families are encouraged to bring travel-size toiletries to exchange for ice cream. The toiletries are delivered to Fort Detrick and then distributed to troops in need, committee member Molly Derr said.

"Kids get to see that Memorial Day is not just about a parade and having a day off from school," said Cristine Doyon, a committee member who helped coordinator Saturday's event.

In addition to bringing toiletries, families were encouraged to sign a banner for active-duty service members.

"It's like a huge card," Derr said.

Some families in Saturday's parade had already found ways to say thank you to active-duty military and veterans.

Jodi and Steve Keyfauver made a special sign to honor their neighbor who is away in Afghanistan.

"He is away from his family, fighting for our freedom," Jodi Keyfauver said.

Like Otis, two of the Keyfauvers' children, Lilliana and Maddox, rode in a decorated wagon. Their oldest daughter, Xylea, led the group on her bicycle.

"It's just one of the things we do to bring the community together," Derr said.

Amtrak mystery: Train arrives in Chicago but Texas man no longer on it

A man who was traveling to Chicago disappeared while on a train from San Antonio, Texas last weekend, an Amtrak spokesman and his family said today.

The family of Andrew Haukereid Jr., 79, was going to meet him at Union Station last Sunday, but Haukereid never arrived, said his son, Greg Haukereid, who has flown into Chicago from Hawaii to help look for his father.

Amtrak police are working with other agencies and Andrew Haukereid?s family to try to locate him, said Marc Magliari, a Chicago-based Amtrak spokesman.

Amtrak investigators have alerted police departments along the Amtrak route, especially between Arkansas ? where the train was when Andrew Haukereid was last seen on Saturday --and Chicago.

A passenger who was traveling on the same part of the train as Andrew Haukereid told his family that he had been on the train, but was last seen at some point while the train was between Little Rock, Ark., and St. Louis.

Andrew Haukereid?s luggage, including his prescription drugs for pain and high blood pressure, arrived in Chicago, but when another son who was supposed to take him to Rockford tried to find him at Union Station, he was not there.

Greg Haukereid said his father may be confused, but does not suffer from dementia. He had retired and moved to San Antonio from Chicago.

Police told the missing man?s family that surveillance video doesn?t appear to show Andrew Haukereid getting off the train in either St. Louis or Chicago, Greg Haukereid said.

Andrew Haukereid is white, with thick, curly grey hair and is tanned. He stands about 5-foot-6 and weighs about 150 punds.

When last seen, Andrew Haukereid, who also is known as Junior, was wearing black dress pants, black dress shoes, a red T-shirt and a medium-colored blue jacket.

Anyone who may have seen Andrew Haukereid is asked to call local police.

Webber wins Monaco GP; Alonso takes overall lead

MONACO (AP) ? Mark Webber won the Monaco Grand Prix from the pole Sunday while Fernando Alonso moved narrowly into the championship lead in Formula One.

Webber is the sixth different driver to win in the opening six races of the season, a first for the series.

Drivers favored a one-stop tire strategy on the most difficult track for overtaking. Webber, in effect, needed to make it to the first corner in front and then negotiate a clean pit stop.

The 35-year-old Australian did just that to stay ahead of Nico Rosberg and Alonso for his eighth career win. It was his second victory in three years at Monaco for Red Bull, which has won the last three at this track from the pole position.

"I'm feeling incredible," Webber said. "It was reasonably straightforward at the start. It's just a matter of then getting back into a reasonable gap (with) the weather threatening."

Alonso, who is bidding for his third F1 title, headed into the race tied with two-time defending champion Sebastian Vettel with 61 points. He now leads Vettel and Webber by three points.

"It's interesting to see the constant surprises we're having this season. You never know who's going to be in pole and win the race," Alonso said. "It's difficult in Monaco, but we managed the traffic."

Several drivers failed to finish, including Jenson Button and Michael Schumacher.

Vettel drove brilliantly to finish fourth, after starting ninth, and Red Bull's strategy of keeping him on the same set of tires for 46 laps worked to perfection.

"It was an amazing day for the team," Webber said.

McLaren driver Lewis Hamilton finished fifth ahead of Ferrari's Felipe Massa.

Webber clenched his fist as he crossed the finish line less than one second ahead of Rosberg's Mercedes.

"Unfortunately, it didn't come together perfectly, but I'm happy with second place overall," Rosberg said.

Although the front six were relatively untroubled as rain splashed the Monaco circuit late in the afternoon, there was chaos elsewhere.

The race was only seconds old when a crash took out four drivers, including Frenchman Romain Grosjean, one of the favorites.

Schumacher appeared to nudge his Mercedes into Grosjean as they jostled for position, sending Grosjean's Lotus spinning sideways.

Pastor Malonado's Williams was caught in the mayhem and bashed into Pedro de la Rosa's HRT as all three went out of the race while Schumacher continued. Japanese driver Kamui Kobayashi, whose Sauber was also damaged, failed to restart after making a pit stop for repairs.

"I'm very disappointed," Grosjean said. "I wanted to finish the Grand Prix, but it was a terrible start and that was that."

I don't mean to sound trite, but they should just rename this film "Drug Trip: The Movie" and be done with it. Seriously.Ok then, with that out of the way, I must say, this is a bit of a hard film to really rate or review. Obviously I'm gonna have to do just that, but it is a bit difficult for me.This fantasy centered around The Beatles going out to stop a bunch of creatures caleld Blue Meanies who have taken over a place called Pepperland combines the terrific music of The Beatles with really cool and unique art disrection and visual styles to create a film that is really just an otherworldlt experience. Just so you know, I didn't see this high, but I did have a couple of drinks. I really cn't say what would be the best way to experience this film. I leave that up to you.There's a story, but it's pretty much just a thin clothesline to hang some great tunes and trippy visuals on. This will probably not appeal to some people, but, I at least got something out of it, even if I don't truly know how I feel about this film-hence why my rating is mainly a formaility.I do think this should be seen though, because it is entertaining, and there's some wild stuff going on, even if it does get a bit too self indulgant with the psychedelia. At least there's the music and some subtle, dry humor to make the film more than just trippiness.
